Students and medics from the KCL Wilderness Medicine Society started the Wilderness Training Course in 2015. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 course had to adapt and went online. We took the opportunity provided by a virtual course to expand internationally, having international expert speakers and attendees from across Europe. Following from the success of the 2020 course, we want to retain the opportunity to learn from experts throughout the course, whilst now being able to facilitate the in-person, practical training, which is fundamental to wilderness medicine. 

 

We will be meeting on Thursday evenings and approximately 2 Saturday sessions across the year for the practical elements, from October-March, with breaks for Christmas. 

 

The course is open to anyone with a biomedical and clinical background. The assumed standard is second year medicine with Basic Life Support (BLS), however people with relevant knowledge and experience may still apply. Selection criteria and fees can be found in the application document.

 

Speakers are leading experts in their field, and this course is a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge of Wilderness Medicine and Extreme Physiology.

• Dive and Altitude Medicine

• Toxicology and Envenomation

• Expedition Organisation and Management 

 

The course is internationally accredited by the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS). Credits can be used by delegates to progress their application for Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM), a certification demonstrating that an individual has met a demanding set of requirements validating their training and experience in Wilderness Medicine. The training course provides you with the maximum 28 non-WMS core credits that you can put towards the FAWM application.
