The South Wales Three Peak Trial 2019

After a highly successful Yorkshire Three Peaks last spring, this year KCLWMS took on a new endeavour in South Wales. 18 of our members took part in 3 different challenges, all of which were designed to test endurance and map reading skills; Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Cardiff Outdoor Group organised the event and a total of 862 walkers took part on the day across the different routes.

We were incredibly fortunate to have not a drop of rain all weekend, but mostly beautiful sunny weather.

The peaks climbed varied across the groups and included Bal Mawr, Pen Cerrig Calch, Sugar Loaf for our Platinum team and Skirrid Fawr, Blorenge and Sugar Loaf for our Gold and Silver teams.

We all set off early in the morning, the earliest leaving at 7.20am, after our first night of two at Black Sheep Backpackers hostel in Abergavenny, ideally located next to the train station.

We were joined by many others at the start, and had several check points to register at in order to complete the challenge. And it was certainly a challenge, our map reading skills were put to the test and many blisters were had, but there were lots of smiles too.

We were welcomed at the final check point with tea, coffee and cakes around 6pm. We were certainly ready to take our boots off and it was starting to get dark (see photo below).

Our final task was to then find a pub with space for 18 people. Luckily the local spoons was able to accommodate us for dinner and drinks before a well earned rest back at the hostel.

Overall it was a fantastic weekend and many, many thanks go to Beth, one of our events officers this year, for organising the trip. What a weekend we had, with some of our team completing their furthest and most challenging walk yet. A excellent start to spring and we hope to be back again in the future!
